Illustration: ‘Mamie’
“Mamie” is a traditional illustrated piece I drew as a gift to my mother. It is a very personal piece, honouring my recently passed grandmother.
She was a strong and resilient French woman, who took her own life in 2014 and no one knew why. I have fond memories of her growing up - having brunch in a French bistro, playing Scattergories together with my mum, and all her little Russian facts (she was an avid lover of the Russian language and culture.) Every year, my mother and I would send her flowers from Perth all the way to Nice (in France) using Interflora, and each time we made sure to include Gerbera daisies and other flowers of a warm colour palette. Pictured here surrounded in those same Gerbera daisies, I miss my ‘Mamie’ each and every day, and hope to honour her legacy in my artwork.
I chose to enter this artwork into a local art exhibition, being the Belmont Art Awards 2023. This piece was selected to be exhibited, and was showcased to the public for a period of 2 weeks. Pictured below is when I attended the opening night of the Awards. This was my second time ever exhibiting an artwork, and I was beyond excited to know that my grandmother and her legacy would be on display for all.
