Packaging Design: Yogi

I was presented with a unique brief for this project: re-imagine a common product in a more sustainable way. After much thought and deliberation, I selected the single-serve yoghurt tub/pouch, as I feel these are far too wasteful and could be made far more compostable and recyclable. As picture below, I began exploring different ideas and materials with which to construct the packaging. Taking into consideration production costs and the environmental footprint of each material, I opted for a container made out of fully recycled and compostable paper, with a bio-plastic lining within which the yoghurt would be housed. Going one step further, I chose to create a vegan and eco-friendly yoghurt to make this product even more sustainable.

And thus came about the brand, Yogi. Having links to self-development and improvement and oneness with nature, I felt it fitting to call the brand, ‘yogi’, as it not only was good for the earth and our bodies, but also the name sounds somewhat like the word for ‘yoghurt’. The logo I created for this brand is featured below, and the main image is that of a cow, with her third eye open, seemingly in a moment of meditation. Next to this you can see a final concept idea for the sustainable packaging.

On the side of the box are instructions, showing the consumer how best to dispose of the product. The outer part can either be composted or recycled (if torn away from the lining). The inner lining is made from a fully compostable and biodegradable bioplastic. Thus, none of this packaging should end up in landfill, which is far more sustainable than options currently on the market in the single-serve yoghurt category.
